Is it the 'right time' for your teacher to appear?
'You never know WHEN or WHERE the teacher will appear - and it ends up - you never know WHO the teacher will be'.
In my experience it is 'IN the being willing' where the threshold of discovery begins. One of my teachers, most definitely, has been Judi and furthermore, I am thrilled to add - everyone else I participate with. And, this time - I am including myself. I am my own teacher - when I open and allow it to be so. The Satir Models have helped me understand who I am; the parts of me that we all have in common - like yearnings, and the parts that make us each who we are individually.' Tammy Mickelson
I met Judi a few years back. I was intrigued by the work she was doing; how respected and well known she is in our community. A close friend of mine invited me to go to a workshop in Judi's basement - despite really knowing what I was getting myself into. I heard that she had just come back from a Satir Training down south, and I was open to the experience. I didn't know much about Judi, Virginia Satir or her basement experience invitation. It ended up being memorable and transformational.
When Co-Vid hit in early 2020, I found myself with some time - matched with a desire - to keep learning more about what I witnessed and experienced that day in Judi's basement. I began participating in many of her workshops, including a series that was a fund raiser for another community service I was involved in. I was starting to get a basic foundation in Virginia Satir's models, and teachings, through Judi and other participants and facilitators. Virginia Satir is a pioneer in Family Systems and Models is relevant and applicable today. I was hooked - and willing to learn and practice what I was learning more. I was seeing firsthand the difference these workshops were making in many peoples lives. I saw that mainly by encouraging people to celebrate their uniqueness - their value in the world - and understanding themselves with compassion - they were able to show up as themselves wholeheartedly. Who doesn't need more of that?
I recently agreed to take part as the Star (the term used for a main focus participant) in an afternoon event called 'A Critical Impact Session'.
I will describe it as 'an invitation for a perception interception; an invitation for transformation'. Myself, two facilitators - Judi Oakes and Jim Edwards, along with a small group of participants embarked on the experience together - opening to 'our teachers that appeared' when we were willing to be students.
